About Portlandia

Premieres on IFC Friday, January 6 at 10/9c

The second season of the IFC Original short-based comedy series PORTLANDIA, created, written by and starring Fred Armisen (SNL) and Carrie Brownstein (vocalist/guitarist, WILD FLAG, Sleater-Kinney), premieres on IFC on Friday, January 6 at 10/9c. Each episode's character-based shorts draw viewers into "Portlandia," the creators' dreamy and absurd rendering of Portland, Oregon.

"I love Portlandia. It really represents so much of what I love culturally, musically and in so many other ways," said Fred Armisen. "This started as just a fun summer activity for Carrie and me. We'd be hanging out in Portland and shooting whatever made us laugh, and that evolved into Portlandia."

PORTLANDIA's inhabitants include but are not limited to: the owners of a feminist book store; a militant bike messenger; an artsy couple who attach cut-outs of birds to everything ("put a bird on it!"); an organic farmer who turns out to be a cult leader; an adult hide and seek league; and a punk rock couple negotiating a "safe word" to help govern their love life. The first episode depicts Armisen and Brownstein meeting with the Mayor of Portland (Kyle MacLachlan) who solicits the duo to write a new theme song for the city. This segment features a cameo from the real mayor of Portland (Sam Adams) playing the assistant to MacLachlan's "mayor." Much of the series' original music is written and performed by Armisen and Brownstein.

An assortment of guest stars inhabit PORTLANDIA, including Kyle MacLachlan (Twin Peaks, Sex & The City), Aubrey Plaza (Parks and Recreation), Selma Blair (Legally Blonde, Hellboy), Heather Graham (The Hangover), Edie McClurg (Ferris Bueller's Day Off), Kumail Nanjiani (Michael & Michael Have Issues), Jason Sudeikis (SNL, The Cleveland Show), and Gus Van Sant (Milk). Singer/songwriter Aimee Mann also guest stars, alongside James Mercer (The Shins), and local Portland musicians Jenny Conlee and Colin Meloy (The Decemberists) and Corin Tucker (Sleater-Kinney).

Brownstein and Armisen spent years observing the joyous eccentricities of Portland, Oregon (when Fred was on hiatus from SNL), which spawned their "Thunderant" project, a compilation of online videos that combined their unique music styles and comedic sensibilities. Their artistic collaboration garnered an online cult following, as their "Thunderant" characters resonated with a young audience celebrating individuality, free spirit and weirdness.

Shot entirely on location in Portland, OR, the series was created and written by Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein and Jonathan Krisel (SNL, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!). Krisel also directs PORTLANDIA. The series is executive produced by Lorne Michaels; Fred Armisen, Carrie Brownstein, Jonathan Krisel and Broadway Video's Andrew Singer are co-executive producers. The show is executive produced for IFC by Debbie DeMontreux, Dan Pasternack, Jennifer Caserta and Evan Shapiro.

Sneak Peek: 'Leis and Lies in Lanai' The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Season 2 Episode 17

The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills "Leis and Lies in Lanai Sneak" Peek Description: The gang heads to Hawaii for Mauricio's birthday -- but will Kim actually make it to the island? Taylor copes with her troubled marriage in LA while the rest of the women fly to Hawaii for some fun in the sun. Kyle can't relax, though, when Kim misses her first -- and second -- flight. (Note: Expires in 3 days)

Via Bravo - An Excerpt from Kyle Richards' Book

Last night my husband Mauricio made a beautiful bubble bath for me. Don't get too excited, though -- it's a rare occurrence!

But it was nice. He even lit two of my favorite vanilla pillar candles. Very romantic.
I stepped into the tub and slipped into the water and was just starting to relax when here comes Portia, my three-year-old daughter, running into the bathroom squealing "Yay! Bubbles!" The next thing I know there are all these Barbies and other dolls and ducks floating in the tub. I end up taking my bubble bath with Ariel from The Little Mermaid and a couple of her friends. So much for romance!

Mauricio and I just had to laugh. We laugh a lot around this house!

When you’re a mother of four, you don’t have a lot of time for yourself—or much of a chance to spend quiet romantic moments with your husband, either, as he keeps reminding me. And since I became one of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, my schedule has gotten so crazy that filming all the time and traveling for the show and taking care of my kids and my husband and trying to look good through it all just leaves me exhausted. Sometimes it feels like there’s no time to breathe! I look in the mirror and think, “Oh my God this show is aging me!”

And then, again, I just have to laugh.

If you’re a working mom, you know exactly what I’m talking about. I have it a lot easier than some mothers, of course. I really respect and admire women who have no choice but to work and put in long hours away from their family, yet still manage to keep everyone and everything going all on their own, some without even the support of a husband.

I’ve always been fortunate. Anyone who watches Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, or just Real Housewives, as I refer to it, knows my family lives a comfortable life. You might even assume that in real real life, all of us who live here just sit around sipping champagne and getting our hair done when we’re not lunching or limo-ing, while the kids are off who-knows-where with the nannies.

But you would be wrong. About me at least. It’s true that I grew up in this town and I’ve lived here all my life. I’m Beverly Hills-born and bred—but I am definitely not your typical Beverly Hills mom.

Can you believe I know some people who never set foot inside a grocery store? They literally never do the marketing for their families! They send their housekeeper or nanny or assistant instead. I do the grocery shopping for my family. It’s just not the same if I don’t—my kids always notice that something isn’t quite right. (My oldest, Farrah, is 23 and through college and has her own apartment now. But Alexia, who’s 15, Sophia, who’s almost 12, and of course Portia are all still here with me.) I know exactly what they want and need. Did you see our Real Housewives reunion special after Season One? Do you remember when Andy Cohen asked if any of the cast knew the price of a gallon of milk? I was the only one who raised my hand! And I was only 20 cents off, though I don’t think he was accounting for the higher prices in Beverly Hills. At my house we go through three gallons of milk a week, the 1% kind. Two I get during the weekly marketing and then I usually have to run back for another before the week is over.

I’ve never had a nanny. I do have a housekeeper, but no nanny. As their mom, I understand and care about my daughters’ needs more than anyone, and I want to be the one who’s making their lunches and snacks and driving them to school. I want to spend every single minute I possibly can with my kids—those are the most precious moments in the world to me.

Growing up in L.A. you see so many people competing to have the nicest car and the biggest house and the most attitude. It’s so ridiculous. I have friends who are having a hard time keeping food on the table right now and I have friends who are billionaires, and everything in-between. When Mauricio and I were first married, we didn’t have much. And who knows? That may be true again. Things could always change. That’s what I tell my girls: “You don’t know what the future holds. You don’t know what you’ll have or what you won’t.” But it really doesn’t matter. Someone can have a gazillion dollars and a 100,000 square-foot home but it doesn’t make their life better than yours or mine. They may not have the husband I have, or your fabulous kids. I’ve never felt intimidated by the jaw-dropping wealth in this town and I sure never lord it over someone who has less than me. I treat everyone with respect, no matter where they come from or who they are or what they have. I enjoy and appreciate the nice things Mauricio and I have. We’re blessed. But those things aren’t the most important things in my life.

What matters more than anything to me are the relationships in my life. My family, my friends, the ones I love. You know, I think I have this persona now from people watching Real Housewives that I’m this really strong girl, some kind of roaring tiger. The truth is I do have a lot of inner strength. But I’m very emotional. I’m very sensitive—overly sensitive, maybe. I am touched easily and quite intensely by things, and sometimes I’m given to uncontrollable tears. I don’t think it came across in Season One that I’m not only a passionate person, but a compassionate person as well.

Mob Wives 2: Hector AKA 'Junior' Pagan Cast Profile

Mob Wives Season 2 - 'Junior' Credit: Piotr Sikora for Vh1 Networks
Hector AKA Junior Pagan
Junior grew up in the streets of Brooklyn and had a burgeoning career as a boxer. He was well on his way to becoming a champ until a fight at a nightclub ended his career. He was celebrating a recent win by knockout and was approached by a gang of guys. Fearing nothing, he fought them all but then was struck in the back of the head with a full 40 ounce bottle of beer. This resulted in Junior having to get a metal plate in his head and ending his boxing career for good.
So like most of the young tough guys around him, he turned to the streets and caught the attention of the authorities, landing himself in jail at a young age. Upon his release he met and married Renee Graziano, daughter of Anthony Graziano. They were married for many years and had one son, Anthony John Pagan - AJ. Junior, who lost both of his parents, became very close to Renee's father, Anthony, and often referred to him as his own father. Eventually, Junior and Renee divorced but like many devoted parents they remained close throughout the years.
Junior also remained close to Renee's father, Anthony, and close to the lifestyle and eventually ended up part of one of the largest mob busts in history. Renee and Junior definitely had their ups and downs and a love hate relationship, but ultimately it was their love for AJ and the realization that the love for each other just never went away that kept them close. This brought them back together again several times throughout their separation and even most recently.
Can their love weather the relationship when they are both two perfect storms? But as in many situations in life a person's loyalty and trust will be put to the test... -VH1

Mob Wives 2: Angela "Big Ang" Raiola Cast Profile

Angela "Big Ang" Raiola:[VH1 Bio]Angela Raiola aka "Big Ang" is the niece of Salvatore "Sally Dogs" Lombardi, a deceased captain of the Genovese crime family. Angela, a single mother of 2 was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY with her two sisters and four brothers. Big Ang always strived to be popular with "the mob." She is what many consider a mob moll. Owning many mafia hangouts over the years, she became like "one of the guys" - even catching a case with some high ranking members of the mob. She was loved by them all. She is like a character straight from the movie Goodfellas and lives by the lifestyle code. Ang has dated many gangsters throughout her life but has always remained independent. She is not the typical woman who would depend on a man. Big Ang has managed to make her own way and provide her own means within this world, though she was always lavished with houses, cars, jewelry, furs (you name it) by many well known mob wise guys. One would believe that they call her Big Ang for "E Cups" or her even larger lips, but is really because of her larger than life personality. She is hysterically funny without even meaning to be. Often referring to herself as "bad girl" she will have you laughing upon meeting her and keep you laughing until you leave.

Carla's ex-husband Joe is now out of prison after serving 88 months for his involvement in a boiler room scandal. The couple have twin 8-year olds, Joseph and Carmen, but that doesn't curb Carla's desire to party like there's no tomorrow. While she refuses to back down from beef with Renee, her heart may finally be opening up to her ex-con ex-husband. - VH1

Carla loves to go out and hang with her friends, eat healthy and exercise.  If she doesnt like you, you're gonna know it... Family is very important to her and if it wasn't for her mother, she says she'd be lost as she was always the one who was there for her.

Carla also says that people will be surprised at the loving relationship these women have with each other. They argue and fight, but they also back each other up and love each other.

Official VH1 Cast Bio: Carla Facciolo grew up in Bergen Beach, Brooklyn, where she had a similar upbringing to Renee Graziano. While her father went to prison when she was young, it didn't stop her from living the lifestyle she grew to love. When Carla was 17 she started dating street guys and really got a taste of the life. She hung out with girls like Renee, and others -- whose parents were either in the life or extremely wealthy. Carla likes the finer things in life and thought she'd met her match when she married Joey Ferragamo, a stock broker. Although Carla thought she had finally gotten away from the lifestyle she lived growing up, her husband eventually got indicted and convicted for a boiler room scandal and Carla once again found herself dealing with the ins and outs of prison. Carla tells her twins, who she feels are too young to know where their dad is, that he is away at work. She is a stay at home mom and sales rep for a juice company. She takes good care of herself and prides herself on her hair and great body.

Mob Wives 2: Ramona Rizzo Cast Profile

Mob Wives Season 2 - Ramona Rizzo Credit:  Piotr Sikora for Vh1 Networks
Ramona Rizzo
Ramona Rizzo is no stranger to the mob lifestyle. She is the granddaughter of the infamous Benjamin Ruggiero aka Lefty Guns who was played by Al Pacino in the movie Donnie Brasco.
Ramona grew up with Karen Gravano and Renee Graziano as they all shared a similar mafia upbringing in Staten Island. Ramona and Karen grew up very close. They have been together since the age of two, made their first communions together and even refer to themselves as "cousins." Although not blood related, some would say they are closer than some cousins who are. What was different for Ramona was that although her family was connected, they tried to keep it very secret, even amongst their own community.
They especially tried to keep it from their children. Ramona, who had a very close bond with her grandfather, longed for a different life as she was very turned off by the fact that he had to spend so many years in prison.
Enamored by the finer things in life, she didn't turn too far away from her upbringing, even though she married a man of Arab descent. His business dealings were also connected to "the lifestyle." Ramona's family was not happy with her choice as they wanted so much more for their daughter - a doctor, a lawyer, a legitimate man. Ramona ran off with her soon to be husband and father of her four kids. They lived the high life until Ramona discovered that her husband's business was still built on lies and deception. They moved from mansion to mansion in the United States to palaces in the Middle East. When Ramona tried to divorce him, he refused to let her leave his country. Stuck in Jordan for two years, she fought tooth and nail to get herself and her kids back to the United States, even though her husband told her that if she leaves, she leaves with nothing. But this master manipulator could not stop Ramona, and she has returned to the US so that she can give her kids a "normal" lifestyle.
Upon returning to the States, she was faced with the repercussions of her husband's business misdeeds and had two criminal cases against her. She is now on her own raising four kids without the means she was accustomed to her entire life. Tough as nails, Ramona is determined to get her life back on track, make amends with her parents, trust a man again, and give her kids the lifestyle she had growing up. Nothing can stand in her way....cause she will knock it down. - VH1

Mob Wives executive producer Jenn Graziano told the NYPost  “Karen and Ramona grew up together, did their First Communion together and slept over each other’s houses. They’re really close and call each other ‘cousins.’ They’re probably tighter than real blood cousins, but they’re not related.”

Sneak Peek - Mob Wives 2 - The Gloves are Off!

Mob Wives returns to VH1 on January 1st ...

Mob Wives 2: Renee Graziano Cast Profile

Renee Graziano Mob Wives Season 2 Credit: Piotr Sikor for vh1networks
Renee Graziano - "Loyalty is everything." Renee Graziano is the daughter of Anthony Graziano, who according to the Federal Government was a high ranking member of La Cosa Nostra. Renee grew up during the heyday of the mob -- when things still fell off trucks and people still dropped off envelopes even when it wasn't your birthday.

Immersed in the culture since birth, she embraced the lifestyle as her own and became a "mob loyalist". Renee eventually married (then divorced) Junior. Together they have one son, AJ. When Renee was young her best friend was arrested and sentenced to many years behind bars. This was her first real introduction to prison, but unfortunately not her last. Thanks to a circle of friends living the street life, Renee has visited over 83 prisons and written hundreds of letters to comfort the many friends she had on "the inside." This correspondence gave her the idea to turn her love of the "the life" into a greeting card company called JAIL MAIL.

"'Mob Wives' is one of the most authentic and compelling series we've ever done at VH1," said Jeff Olde, EVP Original Programming and Production, VH1. "At its heart are four strong women who either grew up in 'the life,' or married into it. They are all now at a defining moment, picking up the pieces and carrying on as their husbands or fathers do time. Each woman is re-examining her life to determine what's best for her and her children."

The second season of "Mob Wives" picks up where the first left off -- with each cast member dealing with major personal life issues. The rift between Karen and Drita is far from over -- will they ever be able to 'bury the hatchet'? Renee goes under the knife for major plastic surgery that may have some unexpected consequences, while also contemplating her future with her ex-husband Junior. Drita is considering her options when it comes to leaving her husband Lee -- while Carla's relationship with her estranged husband Joe may take an unexpected twist. And, of course, everyone wants to know what's in Karen's soon-to-be-released book -- the one she moved back toNew York to write! Last season, "Mob Wives" gave viewers an unfiltered look into the closed-door society of Renee, Karen, Carla and Drita, four struggling "allegedly" associated women who have to pick up the pieces and carry on while their husbands or fathers do time for Mob-related activities. United by a bond which few understand, the women are all struggling with their identities and their futures as they raise their kids as single parents in the New York City area.

The "Mob Wives" are: Renee Graziano, Karen Gravano, Drita D’avanzo and Carla Facciolo. Season Two added Ramona Rizzo and Big Ang.

A chat with Renee (originally published on Examiner.Com, June 2011)

LK: Tell me more about your musical taste! I read on Twitter that you’re a big Blondie fan. Can you give us a sample Renee playlist?
Renee Graziano: I love music - any type of music. From Motown to disco to hip hop to R&B and of course some rock n roll... Ooh can’t leave out GARTH BROOKS! Blondie play list.... Call me... Heart of Glass... Rapture.... The Tide is High
LK: Love the scenes of you in the kitchen cooking. It makes your scenes feel so real. What part does cooking play in your life as far as taking care of your family and friends and love. Would you consider doing a little cookbook with anecdotes or maybe some instructional cooking videos of you preparing your favorite comfort food?
RG: Already working on it!!! Food brings comfort to the soul... Even if an Italian Family is at war, they still gather round the table for some Sunday Sauce. I am in the process of creating a line of cookbooks...hope to have them out some time during Season 2.
LK: What are some of your most requested recipes?
RG: My Meatballs, my Sunday Sauce, and my Chicken Soup.
LK: How does AJ (her son) like being on the show? He’s a part of pop culture now!
RG: AJ does enjoy being on the show, but he's much more private then me OBVIOUSLY.
LK: Maybe you could design a Mob Wives Trivial Pursuit! How does it feel to be a cultural phenomenon?
RG: Cultural phenomenon!!! I like that, but yes I did know this was gonna blow up. Interesting topic, but even more interesting women.
LK: Who are your favorite “Classic TV Housewives”?
RG: Lucille Ball is my fav!! Then there was the character Momma played by Vickie Lawrence on The Carol Burnett Show and last but not least - Alice from The Honeymooners!! She spoke her mind but loved her man!!
LK: Who are you closest to in the Mob Wives group?
RG: I'm more of a lone wolf – I don’t travel in packs... I see enough girls when we are filming and have enough drama in my own life that I don’t need anyone else’s - lmao!!!
LK: What has been the most pleasant surprise about doing this show?
RH: All the wonderful fans and my loyal Twitter followers that I've been blessed with, let alone the positive feedback on my own personal self!!!
LK: What was your biggest fear about doing the show?
RG: I went into the project without any fear. JUST COURAGE.
LK: Pick a Bravo Housewife to join your cast; pick a Housewife to ban from your cast. Do you agree that they’re nuts?
RG: I don’t hop fences (‘lil mob lingo) I like my MOBWIVES just the way we are!!

Sex, Drugs and a Bar Mitzvah Joan and Melissa Are Back

New York, December 21, 2011 - Talk about Mama Drama - round two! This season, JOAN AND MELISSA: JOAN KNOWS BEST? digs deeper into the lives of Joan and Melissa Rivers - the funny, multi-talented mother- daughter duo, giving viewers an inside look once more at what life is really like for this entertainment dynasty of two. Joan is still Melissa's permanent houseguest, occupying the basement and constantly invading Melissa's turf. With the success of "Fashion Police" and their individual business ventures, both women have a lot to manage, in addition to each other! Working together, living together and playing together would probably be too much for most families, but is it for these two? They survived the first go-around but will they survive another?

On this season of JOAN AND MELISSA: JOAN KNOWS BEST?, we witness family drama Rivers-style. The Rivers clan is on the move - from Joan's uber-plush East Side apartment in Manhattan, to a deluxe suite at a Las Vegas casino where she's headlining, to a frontier ranch in Wyoming where chaos and comedy follow. Meanwhile, back at home Melissa continues to be in a committed relationship with Jason - or as Joan bluntly puts it, she's "still unmarried." Now that her nanny has left, Melissa struggles to balance her career with raising her lovable 10-year-old son Cooper. With both Melissa and Joan's lives in overdrive these days, assistant Sabrina's sassy sister Melody has joined to help add order to this household. And this season, we meet Tony Tripoli, Joan's head writer on their hit show "Fashion Police", who has a "friendly rivalry" with the Rivers other stand-up comedian friend, Lynn. Also, this season, we see Joan and Melissa amongst their celebrity friends such as Perez Hilton, Jimmy Fallon, Jason Alexander and Carol Burnett.

WE tv's JOAN AND MELISSA: JOAN KNOWS BEST? is a mix of comedy, reality and relatability. Like any family where there's ample craziness and differences of opinion, their love is evident. At times loving and at times tumultuous, this ultimate mother-daughter showdown addresses the feelings most daughters have towards their mother in the return of smotherhood.

Highlights include:

- With marijuana legal in California, Joan and Lynne embark on an odyssey to find some in order to help them relax, much to Melissa's dismay.

- Joan embraces the back country that Melissa loves and finds herself in a new version of City Slickers, attempting to ride a horse, use a fishing pole, and fire a weapon - things you would NEVER do in the big city!

- Melissa's friend Conrad decides to covert to Judaism and an excited Joan throws him a bar-mitzvah.

- Melissa finds herself single after news of her live-in boyfriend Jason's infidelity.

- Joan and her employees are forced to go through sensitivity training after Joan faces a possible sexual harassment lawsuit.

- Joan celebrates her 78th birthday by getting a tattoo, and then gets bumped from a coveted talk show spot by a much younger, up-and-coming comedian.

- Sabrina celebrates her 20th wedding anniversary by renewing her vows Vegas-style with Joan and Melissa.
