The Pocketbook Monologues (described as a black woman's Vagina Monologues) is a fundraising effort that supports organizations working toward ending violence against girls and women with their focus on sexual responsibility and HIV/AIDS.
Lisa's monologue dealt with loving and marrying a man who was in prison and was titled, "A Closed Pocketbook." Kandi's moving monologue, titled "A Broken Pocketbook," which brought down the house, was the story of a child of a prostitute/mother, who was sexually abused by her stepfather, and later acquired HIV/AIDS. It doesn't get more real than that.
Created by Sharon K. McGhee and Executive Produced by YYP, The Pocketbook Monologues is:
...a collection of stories from women of color who share their heartfelt emotions about intimacy and the responsibility that goes with it. This book highlights each woman's brutally honest, funny and poignant recollection and reveals never before told stories about their "pocketbook". "PocketBook is the term used by many older African-American women to to describe the triangle that separates their thighs.Dr. Joycelyn Elders, former United States Surgeon General, has this to say:
The PocketBook Monologues invites women of color to have an open and honest discussion about sexual responsibility. Every woman that knows better should find a girl and prepare her for a world that holds devastating consequences when she is not informed. For years I have been a strong advocate for preparing our youth for the realities of making bad decisions about their sexual health. Just saying no to sex does not work. We have been preaching abstinence for centuries. Every capable woman has a role to play to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS. Sharon McGhee is stepping up and embracing a concept that I have been advocating throughout my career, the truth!Excellent message, excellent night. Thanks to all for sharing the message.
